Phillip Lim‘s starting point for his Pre-fall 2016 was“Utilitarian leisure.” The collection is an eclectic lineup that delivered the ultimate real-life, cool-girl style with an innovative flair. “We thought about the idea of realness and how to glam her up and keep her real at the same time,” Lim said. “But how do you bring this character to light by giving her a dose of eccentricity and immediacy?”
As it turns out, beautifully. With numerous references and a touch of whimsy — such as a friendship knot motif that was worked into the looks via prints and twisted fabrics — most of the looks worked a feminine take on utility. On the casual side, Lim’s sporty knits and tailored sportswear riffed on varsity and equestrian themes, while metallic lamé pleated skirts and outerwear added a bit of dazzle.
Lim also added some quirky hybrids, such as a Japanese camel twill trenchcoat with nylon bomber-jacket sleeves. Another, more classically pretty example: ribbed sweater dresses trimmed with lace for the appearance of a slip underneath. It all brimmed with easy-to-wear originality.
